The Network Innovation Centre

May 01
Season of Productivity and Implementation

SA Power Networks first established the Network Innovation Centre in 2012 in response to significant disruptive changes that had become apparent in the electricity industry. The objective of the centre was to provide SA Power Networks with a facility in which to trial and test new technologies that could impact on their business and customers in the immediate and mid-term future with a view to develop strategies to adapt to these changes and/or capture opportunities that they may present.
Since that time, SA Power Networks’ responses to these technology trends have been more fully developed and it has become apparent that the centre could also provide an opportunity to inform and educate the company’s stakeholders as to the implications of new technologies and their related strategies. On that basis, the centre has been expanded to incorporate a wide range displays, and these tours provide key stakeholders the opportunity to better understand the future of the electricity network and the role that customers, SA Power Networks and other key stakeholders may play in that future.
The centre incorporates both network and customer side technologies and includes a section of distribution network that can be viewed close-up as well as a ‘smart house’ which integrates solar PV, battery storage, and a home energy management system with a range of traditional appliances.  A microgrid display and an electric vehicle are also on display. The tour generally takes one hour, and places are strictly limited.
